Tips for writing good website content

Posted On 17 Sep, 2007Views : 3041 Previous | Next
  1. Make a information-rich website and write clear and original content. Keywords should be matched with the page content.
  2. Both search engines and users love content. So, write for them minimum 200 words per page. Search engines will get your point more easily if written in detail and it is also good for users as they will get large information. While writing also consider that HTML file size don’t exceed 100 kb otherwise search engines may give up.
  3. Use HTML text, if possible because search crawlers can’t read graphics. Sometimes site’s content writer present large sections via graphics which though makes your site more impressive and meaningfull but also makes it unreadable for search engines.
  4. HTML text should be visible, otherwise your text may remain unindexed. Sometimes designer try to cheat search engines by repeating keywords in tiny fonts or in the same colour as of the background to make the text invisible to browser. It is strongly recommended that these are not good practices.
  5. Add HTML hyperlinks to the homepage that lead to major inside pages or sections of your web site. Only Image Map Links from the home page to inside pages can’t help search engines to follow links inside the site, because most of the evocative and relevant information is on inside pages rather than on the home page. Put hyperlinks down at the bottom of the page.
  6. Create a site map page with text link to every page within your site. This will help the search engines to locate pages within your site.
  7. Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number i.e. less than 100.
  8. Be creative and faithful; make content for users and not for search engines. Presentation of two different data to users and search engines is known as Cloaking and it is not a good practice.
  9. Keep the site layout simple, use CSS-based layout instead of table-based layout because in CSS-based layout clean code, flexibility of important content placement, and greater content density make it easier for search engines to access and rank.
  10. Try to use the technology that search engine spiders understand, Some search engine spiders don’t understand Frames, CGI scripts, Image maps and dynamically generated pages because these spiders are just an automated web browser and like browsers they sometimes lag behind in their support for new HTML tags. So every page that uses frames should include a NOFRAMES section on the page. This tag will not affect the way a page looks but it will help a page get listed with the major search engines. The NOFRAMES tag was invented by Netscape for backward compatibility with browsers that didn't support the FRAME and FRAMESET tags.
  11. Do not use doorway pages because they are useful for robots only. Search Engines like to index sites with rich content not the sites which tries to deceive search engines.
  12. On your page you should always try to have a healthy amount of descriptive text to explain what the page is about, don't rely on the title of the page.
  13. Keep your site fresh and updated.
  14. Never copy other’s work and be original. Duplicate data is easily detectable by search engines and may disqualify a site for ranking.
  15. Make your content rich with keywords phrases.
